VAT Calculator
Add or remove VAT from a price instantly. Defaults to the UK standard rate, but you can adjust it for any rate or country.
How VAT calculations work
Adding VAT: multiply the net amount by the VAT rate to get the VAT amount, then add it to the net to get the gross (total) price.
Removing VAT: if you have a gross price and need to find the net amount, divide the gross by (1 + VAT rate) rather than simply subtracting the percentage — this is the step people most often get wrong.
Frequently asked questions
What's the current UK VAT rate?
20% is the UK standard rate, with a 5% reduced rate for specific goods and services, and 0% for others. Rates can change — always confirm the current rate with HMRC for anything official.
Can I use this for other countries' VAT or sales tax?
Yes — use the custom rate option and enter whatever rate applies in your country. The maths works the same regardless of the specific percentage.
Is this a substitute for accounting advice?
No — this is a simple calculator for quick figures, not a replacement for proper bookkeeping or advice from an accountant, especially for VAT returns or official filings.
